More About S1 Bonus Episode - The Kids Take Over
This episode is another personal one. I wanted to take you on a journey through my early work experiences and share a little bit about how they shaped the person I am today - and I wanted to include my two big kids, but with a twist - they got to ask the questions!
As a mum of four and a former teacher, my journey into the working world began in a rather unconventional way – dressing up as Santa at my parents' butcher shop during the busy Christmas period. It may not have been your typical gig, but it gave me a sense of purpose and kept me from being home alone.
Fast forward to my first official job at McDonald's, where I ran drive-through on busy Friday nights. The camaraderie with my friends and the fast-paced environment taught me the importance of teamwork and customer service, skills that would become valuable in my future endeavours.
I’ve had some great jobs over the years….and some not so great ones…as well as some good and not so great bosses. And they can make or break your experience at work.
A good boss, as far as I’m concerned, is someone who recognises and nurtures your potential, offering opportunities for growth. I've been fortunate to have bosses who believed in me, fostering a positive work environment. On the flip side, a bad job is one where you feel undervalued and unsupported. My stint at the Toowong bus depot, with its early morning shifts and lack of support, was undoubtedly a challenging chapter in my career - I didn’t mention it in the episode, but I was the first woman to ever do that job at Toowong, and some of the drivers really didn’t want me there. It was pretty rough, but I learnt to be more resilient, and also that I am NOT an early bird!
I wanted to do this episode so I could share the story behind the Bring Your Kid to Work podcast. Inspired by my desire to bridge the gap between perceived job roles and the day-to-day reality, the podcast aims to showcase the diverse range of careers available. By interviewing parents and their children, I want to provide a better understanding of the impact jobs have on individuals and their families.
That’s why this special bonus episode features my own big kids, Megan and Alex, who take the reins and interview me about my career journey. We discuss my time at Brisbane City Council, my passion for making a difference, and the delicate balance of being a dedicated parent. It really reflects the essence of Bring Your Kid to Work – exploring the multifaceted nature of work and family life.
Bring Your Kid to Work isn't just a podcast; it's an insightful peek into the world of work through the eyes of parents and their children. I love to highlight the importance of aligning your job with your passions and values, cherishing supportive bosses, and cultivating positive work environments. Through personal stories and experiences, I want to continue to inspire listeners to explore diverse career paths and make informed decisions about their futures.
Tune in to season two to unravel more fascinating stories behind various careers and gain a deeper understanding of the impact work has on individuals and their families.
And thanks for being a part of the BYK2W family.
